Ballymeade Fire # 1

This is a video that every firefighter should watch. Listen to the responses of the citizens. It's so funny to me that everyone want's to cut us until a fire happens then they are wondering what's taking so long when their house is burning in front of them. Maybe we should forward to some politicians.

The Claymont Volunteer Fire Company has a substation just 1/2 mile away from the scene of this blaze. A truck sits in the station but it is just "window dressing", so the main Claymont station can continue to get federal dollars for keeping it open and fund drive donations from the surrounding communities. After questioning the County Executive's Office on how this situation can be allowed to go on, the reply essentially was: 1) the Delaware Volunteer Fire Commission has no power to change the situation and 2) the Claymont Fire Company officers at the main station claim there are only about 3 members who live near that substation. One can conclude I guess, that the Claymont Fire company needs to have a recruitment drive in the surrounding neighborhoods of the substation, and assign some members from the main station to start hanging out there. In fairness to the firefighters, there was a very long delay in dispatching the call due to a communication gliche- calls apparently were going to Pennsylvania 911, instead of Delaware 911. The units that responded got out and arrived quickly once they were notiied of the alarm. The question still remains - why is Claymont allowing this 40+ year old substation to be just a facade when it is clearly needed now more than ever? The station should be fully functional. That is the duty and responsibility of the Claymont officers. So now, it is no wonder, bystanders are heard saying "when are they coming"?
